How do I pick a realtor? Not only to sell my apartment, but also to help me find a new one?

I live in NYC. I went to a building that had an ‘exclusive seller’, but then found another agent willing to show it to me. I don’t want to be bound to one person somehow by visiting the apartment with this other agent.

You don’t have to stay exclusively with one agent; use as many as you want.

I’ve found word of mouth to be the best recommendation.

Go to below website. They set you up with the realtor, and offer Home Depot gift cards after you close. It’s cool. They arrange financing for your buyer it they want, and you if you are going to buy again. It’s a one stop shop man check it out!

I am a RE agent an loan officer in NY, the first answer is correct, you can use as many as you want unless you sign a contract with one to be exclusive.

Both working with one and many have their advantages, but loyalty to a good agent could mean loyalty in return which could be like having a pit bull on your side while going through this rough process.

That website sounds really cool but whats different between that an opening the yellow pages…Word of mouth is great but it’s kind of dependent on the experiences of that one person..that same agent could have been on a good streak with that client but stinks the rest of the time. It’s, “like a box of chocolates” my friend, use your gut and go with the person thats most attentive to your needs and appears somewhat trustworthy…if you have any questions or need help with anything, email me at

Talk to different realtors, whoever can answer all your RE questions without fumbling and “I dont know” -ing their way through it (and that you have a good rapport with) go for it.

You don’t have to use the same agent to both help you buy an apartment and sell yours, although it may save you some time. I’m not sure how it’s done in NYC, but here people typically attend open houses and that’s a good way to judge a real estate agent because you get to see them in action and determine if they will be good at selling your home. As a buyer, you don’t have to commit to one agent if you don’t want to. You might be best by finding someone to sell your apartment and shop on your own for a new one.
